Chlorine is used in many industries, science and household needs: the production of polyvinyl chloride, plastics, synthetic rubber, used for bleaching fabrics, paper, cardboard. In chemical production, chlorine is used for the production of hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), metal chlorides, poisons, medicines, fertilizers and insecticides. Chlorine and its derivatives play an important role in the preparation of high-quality drinking water and wastewater disinfection.
In most cases, a direct current source – a rectifier unit-is required to produce chlorine. Depending on the chlorine production technology, units with the following parameters are used:
- at water treatment stations from 1 to 15kA;
- membrane electrolysis with DC current up to 50kA;
- 3) Electrolysis on a liquid mercury cathode. Current up to 300kA. The technology is currently outdated.
