One of the most important and expensive elements of any power equipment is a transformer. Transformers for rectifiers and furnaces are classified as “special transformers” because of the high currents of the secondary windings (up to several tens of kiloamperes), a large depth of regulation, specific connection groups and operation with a high content of harmonics. Not every manufacturer is able to produce such a transformer. Unlike conventional network transformers, each transformer for a rectifier unit is unique and is produced according to its own specification, taking into account the requirements for primary and secondary voltage, operating modes of the equipment, location and, as a rule, the design of the rectifier unit. This specification is made by the manufacturer of the rectifier. The further functioning of the entire unit as a whole complex largely depends on a well-designed specification for the transformer.
At the moment, two types of transformers are widely used – dry and oil. Dry transformers attract customers by the absence of oil management and “problems” with fire supervision – due to the lack of fire-hazardous transformer oil, the requirements for the room are much milder. At the same time, with equal power with oil transformers, dry ones are larger in size and, importantly, more expensive. At the same time, they have a lower overload capacity, there are problems with placement (the necessary condition is the absence of dust, moisture, temperature differences), it is impossible to install OLTC. Currently, a class of sealed transformers with a fire-safe, environmentally friendly liquid dielectric is being developed. As additional options, oil transformers can be equipped with a protective oil discharge system and a system for analyzing dissolved gases in transformer oil.
